Last Supper Reenactment

Our second and third grade students recently had a truly special and memorable experience during their religion class—one that brought faith, history, and community together in a meaningful way.

They were invited to attend a beautiful reenactment of the Last Supper, thoughtfully presented by Ms. Carnazzo’s 8th grade class. The gathering took place in the school boardroom, which was transformed into a simple yet powerful setting. We sat crisscross around a tablecloth representing the final meal Jesus shared with His apostles before His crucifixion.

To deepen our understanding, Ms. Carnazzo guided students through images of the Last Supper, including several famous artistic interpretations. We explored how many well-known paintings depict Jesus and His twelve disciples seated around a long rectangular table. At the same time, students learned that earlier historical depictions suggest the meal may have taken place around a semicircular or round table, with participants reclining on cushions on the floor—offering a new perspective on this sacred event.

One of the most meaningful parts of the experience was the reenactment itself. The 8th grade students lovingly prepared for this moment by baking bread, allowing our younger students to take part in a symbolic sharing of the meal. Together, they experienced the breaking of bread and shared “wine” (grape juice), helping bring the story of the Last Supper to life in a tangible and age-appropriate way.

This hands-on experience was not only educational but also a joyful opportunity for our students to grow in their Catholic faith. The collaboration between grade levels made the event even more special, fostering a sense of community, mentorship, and shared learning.

A heartfelt mahalo to Ms. Carnazzo and her incredible 8th grade class for creating such a thoughtful, engaging, and faith-filled experience for our younger students. It is moments like these that truly bring learning—and faith—to life at St. John Vianney.
